How Depthly Works
Depthly is designed to help people give meaningful connections the time and attention they need. Instead of encouraging endless browsing and low-effort interactions, the platform uses invitations, connection limits, readiness phases, and shared relationship spaces.
The invitation model
Most dating platforms allow someone to express interest with almost no effort.
On Depthly, reaching out begins with an invitation. A member writes a short note explaining why they would like to connect. The recipient can read the invitation and decide whether to accept it.
A conversation begins only after both people have chosen to participate.
Matches and connections
An open match represents mutual interest or an available opportunity to connect.
An active connection begins when an invitation has been accepted. Active connections receive their own shared Connection Space.
Members may have up to five open matches and three active connections at one time.
These limits are intentional. Depthly is designed to encourage people to invest attention in a smaller number of meaningful possibilities.
Readiness phases
Relationships on Depthly move through four phases:
- Grounding
- Opening
- Exploring
- Deepening
These phases reflect emotional readiness and the level of investment someone is prepared to offer.
Members complete a readiness assessment when they join. Their current phase helps shape the prompts, guidance, and features available to them.
Readiness phases are not permanent labels or measures of personal worth. They are tools for self-awareness and more honest participation.

Connection Spaces
Each accepted invitation creates a Connection Space shared by the two members.
A Connection Space may contain:
- The message history
- Shared milestones
- Relationship prompts
- The current phase of the connection
- Progress made between the two members
The space is designed to help a relationship develop with context rather than reducing the experience to a message thread.
Moving into friendship
When a connection develops beyond its initial stage, members may promote it to a friendship.
The relationship history and shared milestones remain available, while an active connection slot becomes available for a new connection.
Friendship does not imply a specific romantic outcome. It recognizes that a meaningful relationship has developed and deserves continuity.
Behavioral trust signals
Depthly privately tracks three behavioral signals:
- Response Rate
- Response Time Score
- Follow-Through Rate
Together, these may form an internal RRE behavioral score.
These signals help Depthly identify engaged participation and patterns associated with spam, repeated ghosting, misuse, or rapid connection churn.
RRE data is not displayed publicly and is not intended to measure attractiveness, compatibility, popularity, or personal worth.

No dopamine loops
Depthly does not use:
- Swipe streaks
- Visible like counts
- Public popularity scores
- Endless algorithmic feeds
- Engagement mechanics designed primarily to increase time on the platform
Notifications are limited to meaningful activity, such as:
- A new message
- An accepted invitation
- A relationship milestone
- A change in connection status
The goal is to support connection, not create dependence on the platform.
Intentional by design
Depthly is not designed to maximize the number of people someone encounters.
It is designed to help people become more thoughtful about who they invite in, what they can genuinely offer, and how they participate once a connection begins.
