Readiness Phases
Meaningful connection depends on more than interest.
It also depends on what each person is emotionally prepared to offer.
Depthly uses four readiness phases to help members reflect on where they are, communicate more honestly, and move through connection at a pace that feels responsible.
The phases are:
- Grounding
- Opening
- Exploring
- Deepening
Readiness phases are not personality types, diagnoses, compatibility scores, or permanent labels. They are reflective tools designed to support self-awareness and intentional participation.
Why readiness matters
Two people can be attracted to one another and still be prepared for very different kinds of connection.
One person may be ready to build a committed relationship. Another may still be healing, rebuilding trust, or learning what they want.
Neither position makes someone more valuable than the other.
Difficulty often begins when people are unclear about what they can offer or feel pressured to participate beyond their actual capacity.
Depthly uses readiness phases to make those differences easier to recognize before expectations become misaligned.
Grounding
Grounding is a period of stability, reflection, and reconnection with yourself.
A member in this phase may be:
- Recovering from a breakup, loss, or major life transition
- Rebuilding emotional stability
- Learning to recognize personal needs and boundaries
- Interested in connection but not ready for significant emotional investment
- Seeking clarity before beginning something new
Grounding does not mean someone is unavailable, broken, or incapable of forming meaningful relationships.
It means their current priority is developing enough stability to participate without abandoning themselves or making promises they cannot sustain.
Platform prompts during this phase should emphasize:
- Self-awareness
- Boundaries
- Emotional capacity
- Communication of limits
- Recognizing patterns
- Clarifying intentions
Opening
Opening reflects a growing willingness to meet others and allow new possibilities.
A member in this phase may be:
- Curious about connection
- Becoming more emotionally available
- Willing to communicate and build trust gradually
- Open to being known without forcing an outcome
- Still determining what kind of relationship feels right
Opening is not a commitment to pursue every connection deeply.
It represents a willingness to engage with sincerity, remain curious, and communicate honestly about uncertainty.
Platform prompts during this phase should emphasize:
- Curiosity
- Emotional safety
- Honest invitations
- Shared interests and values
- Early communication
- Mutual pacing
Exploring
Exploring reflects an active willingness to invest in promising connections.
A member in this phase may be:
- Ready to spend consistent time getting to know someone
- Willing to discuss values, needs, affection, and relationship expectations
- Interested in developing emotional and physical intimacy responsibly
- Prepared to follow through on plans and conversations
- Able to tolerate some uncertainty without withdrawing or rushing
Exploring is the phase where possibility becomes more deliberate.
The goal is not immediate commitment. It is consistent participation, reciprocal effort, and enough honesty to discover whether a deeper relationship can grow.
Platform prompts during this phase should emphasize:
- Reciprocity
- Follow-through
- Compatibility
- Conflict and repair
- Emotional intimacy
- Relationship expectations
Deepening
Deepening reflects readiness to build a more committed and interdependent relationship.
A member in this phase may be:
- Ready to prioritize an established connection
- Willing to make shared decisions
- Prepared to discuss exclusivity or commitment
- Comfortable integrating more of their life with another person
- Able to communicate through vulnerability, tension, and change
- Interested in creating long-term trust and stability
Deepening does not require a specific relationship structure or timeline.
It means both people are prepared to treat the connection as something that deserves sustained care, honest communication, and mutual responsibility.
Platform prompts during this phase should emphasize:
- Commitment
- Shared vision
- Trust
- Repair
- Intimacy
- Integration of lives
- Long-term compatibility
The readiness assessment
Members complete a readiness assessment when they join Depthly.
The assessment is intended to help members reflect on:
- Emotional availability
- Recent relationship experiences
- Capacity for consistency
- Comfort with vulnerability
- Willingness to communicate
- Ability to respect boundaries
- Desired level of investment
The assessment does not determine whether someone is worthy of connection.
It helps identify the phase that most closely reflects what they are currently prepared to offer.
Readiness can change
Readiness is not fixed.
Life changes. People heal. Circumstances become more or less demanding. A relationship may create new clarity, or reveal that someone needs to slow down.
Members should be able to reassess their readiness over time.
A change in phase should be treated as information, not failure.
The purpose is to help members participate honestly rather than remain attached to a label that no longer reflects their reality.
How phases affect the experience
A member's readiness phase may shape:
- Reflection prompts
- Conversation guidance
- Suggested pacing
- Milestone recommendations
- Educational resources
- Available relationship tools
- The kinds of invitations the platform encourages
The platform should support the member's current capacity rather than pressure them toward deeper investment before they are ready.
Visibility and privacy
In the current implementation, readiness phase is visible to the member on their own dashboard and to admins in steward and diagnostics views.
There is no current member-facing discover or profile endpoint that exposes another person's readiness phase.
Detailed readiness assessment answers are stored and returned only through the authenticated readiness onboarding endpoint for the current member.
Members can revisit and resubmit the readiness assessment; the saved assessment record is updated, and the recommended phase is recalculated.
Current discover and matching endpoints do not directly apply readiness phase in their matching logic.
Phase updates may also be influenced by internal behavioral scoring in the dashboard orientation state, so the long-term precedence between assessment-derived and behavior-derived phase updates should be finalized as a product decision.
A tool for honesty
Readiness phases are not meant to predict whether a relationship will succeed.
They exist to make one important question easier to answer:
What can I genuinely offer another person right now?
Depthly believes that honest uncertainty is healthier than false certainty, and that clear limits create better conditions for trust.
